Phelps and Biedermann to Renew Rivalry in Berlin in 200 Free
November 13th, 2009-
Michael Phelps will again face off against Paul Biedermann in the 200m freestyle this weekend in the Berlin World Cup meet, although the race will be significantly lower key this time around.
Remember that Biedermann was the German swimmer who beat Phelps in this event at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, and became the first swimmer to defeat the superstar in major international swimming in well over a year.

This time, however, Phelps is not in great shape, as was indicated by him missing 3 out of 5 finals at the previous stop in Stockholm; Biedermann is coming off of recovery from torn muscle fibers in his left thigh; and if Stockholm was any indication, there’s a good chance that neither swimmer will win the event.
Still, the last time Phelps and Biedermann competed against each other was the race that really highlighted the suit controversy. People were stunned that this relatively unknown swimmer, Paul Biedermann could knock off the greatest swimmer to ever live, Michael Phelps. And to make matters worse, the race wasn't all that close. Biedermann was wearing the high-tech, polyurethane Arena X-Glide. Phelps was wearing his old LZR, which was still a fast suit but was nothing compared to Biedermann’s. Most concerned parties decided that this was the deciding factor in the race.
This weekend, Biedermann will still be sporting his polyurethane, shoulders-to-ankles speed suit; however Phelps will instead wear only a waist to knee, 100% textile Jammer that will comply with the new suit rules.

“I am preparing for the next two years, not today. That’s what I grew up wearing. Other can people can use other suits and that’s fine. But this is the only suit you’ll ever see me wear,” Phelps said. “Without the suits, you’ll have to be in better shape, strong in body. That’s what I have to do if I want to swim that many events.”
When Biedermann was asked about the suits, he said simply ““I am going to take advantage of them until the very last day,” Biedermann said.”
For this race, we’ve got our money on Paul X-Glide..err…Biedermann.
