Michael Phelps had another disappointing morning on the second day of competition in Stockholm, Sweden: the third stop of the 2009 FINA World Cup. But at least this time, he had a great swim to make up for it.
In his first prelims swim of the day, the 100m butterfly, Phelps finished 11th in the 100m butterfly. The 100m butterfly was one of the 8 events that he won en route to 8 gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but was the only one he did not set a World Record in (he had to settle for just an Olympic Record). Phelps’ time of 51.06 was still not far off that of the top qualifier, Brazilian Kaio Almeida, who swam a 50.34 in what proved to be a very tight field.
Phelps’ other prelim of the day, the 200m Individual Medley, is an event that he has long dominated on the international scene. That trend didn’t change on Wednesday, where Phelps finished second after the prelims in 1:56.09. The man who out-touched him was Sweden’s Simon Sjodin, in a time of 1:55.99.
