Rolling Back The Records For a Weekend
In Eindhoven, the Netherlands, they’re going to party a whole weekend away like it’s 2007. The Swim Cup Eindhoven 2009, hosted by legendary Dutch sprinter Peter van den Hoogenband, will roll back the clocks on the record books to December 31, 2007. Organizers will offer a €10,000 ($15,000) reward to anyone who breaks a World Record from the pre-polyurethane era in a suit that conforms to the new FINA regulations. The new FINA regulations do not take effect until January 1, 2010, however this meet will require all swimmers to wear them as a sort of preview for the new era
There has been much controversy over what to do about records set in the high-tech suits, and van den Hoogenband, and other organizers, have made their feelings on the matter clear. The Dutch National Team head coach, Jacco Verhaeren, said that organizers are doing "This to underline that we return to textile records again and give swimmers a fair chance to break them."
Other National Team head coaches, including USA-Swimming head coach Mark Schubert and the late Italian National Team coach Alberto Castagnetti, who referred to the suits as “technological doping.”
The meet will take place from November 27-29 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Zwemstadion. See the meets official website for more information.
