Aerobic Swimming- Swimming that will train lung capacity, breath control, and endurance. Swimming that involves a lot of breathing, short rest periods, and long distances with a high heart rate (technically 30 minutes or more). Does not require high speed. For fitness swimmers, aerobic swimming is preferable to anaerobic swimming, due to it's benefit for the hearts and lungs, although anaerobic swimming is also beneficial. Competitive swimmers need a strong mix of both.

Anaerobic Swimming- Swimming that will train stroke rate, strength, and speed. Swimming that involves not a lot of breathing, and short distances at high speeds (sprints). For effective anaerobic swimming, swimmers must be given ample time to recover between each swim. See also: aerobic swimming
