Declared False Start- A swimmer may take a Declared False Start by reporting to the referee prior to their race their intent to not swim an event, and it will not count as a “missed event.” The swimmer must be present to take a declared false start. A declared false start still counts against the number of events a swimmer may swim in a meet. Different organizations have different rules regarding procedures for and consequences of declared false starts.

Distance Per Stroke- A swimming technique where a swimmer tries to maximize the distance they get out of every stroke without sacrificing speed. Should be used in conjunction with stroke rate to maximize stroke efficiency. Calculated as Distance/# of strokes.

Dual Meet- A meet between 2 teams that is scored head-to-head. Usually, these meets are shorter and take place in 1 day. See also Tri meet and Quad meet.
