Peak or Peak Traning- Part of the process of swimming training; the peak is when swimmers will be swimming maximum yardage, working the hardest, and generally breaking down the muscles in their bodies in preparation for the meets when they are at or near their peaks.

Prelims/Finals Meet- A meet that has a first round of races (called prelims), and then the top 8, 16, or 24 swimmers advance to the finals. The finals have an A-final (top 8), and sometimes B-finals (9-16) and C-finals (17-24). Usually, swimmers from each tier of finals can only finish ahead of other swimmers in their final, so swimmers from the A-final are guaranteed no lower than 8th place, swimmers from the B-final are guaranteed no higher than 9th and no lower than 16th, and swimmers from the C-final are guaranteed no higher than 17th and no lower than 24th. Otherwise, similar to an invitational meet.

Premature Taper- A premature taper can happen in the middle of a season if a swimmer misses several practices, be it for injury, sickness, unavoidable circumstances, or any other reason. A swimmer, after this extended rest, might see a temporary time drop at meets, but premature tapers are usually detrimental for the long-term goal of training (which is usually 1 or 2 meets at the end of the season). See also: taper.

Psych Sheet- A list given out before meets (usually invitational-type meets, rather than dual meets) that ranks the swimmers in each event from fastest to slowest. This gives swimmers an idea as to where their best time ranks compared to their competitors. Similar to a heat sheet, except that no lane or heat assignments are given.
