Taper- Part of the process of swimming training; the taper is when swimmers begin to gradually drop their yardage, increase their rest, and allow their bodies to recover. The taper follows the peak. As the taper progresses, swimmers will usually see drastic drops in times at meets. The taper usually culminates in 1 or 2 goal-meets at the end of the season, where swimmers expect to swim their best times. See also: premature taper.

Track Start- A start where the swimmer has one foot forward and one foot back, similar to the way a runner would start a race. The track start has become the predominant start in recent years, whereas previously the two-footed start dominated. Read our AskACoach Article about Two-footed vs. Track Starts

Tri Meet- A meet between 3 teams where each team is scored head-to-head against the other teams. So it is Team A vs. Team B, Team A vs. Team C, and Team B vs. Team C. See also Dual meet and Quad meet.

Two-footed Start- A start where the swimmer has both feet at the front of the block. This start was very popular in previous decades, but has all but disappeared from competitive swimming. Some coaches still recommend this start for younger swimmers. Read our AskACoach Article about Two-footed vs. Track Starts
